So easy, so addictive, so many possibilities - why didn't I think of this?? All credit to Jellywares for this great idea and pattern - I'm thinking towel edgings, garlands, tarting up of t-shirts etc..

I adapted Jellyware's pattern slightly for finer ric-rac, by using SC and only 1CH, and now the seed has been sown I can see that you could use lots of different crochet motifs - hearts, flowers etc...very, very addictive!

I sat down last night after a gloriously sunny day in North Eastern Scotland, and wanted a quick crochet fix. I found a ball of parcel string in my stash and remembered a pattern for a crochet skull in a book I bought a couple of years back

'Craftivity' by Tsia Carson, is a collection of projects for 'The DIY Lifestyle' and has a couple of crochet and knitting patterns.

The skull pattern was written by Diane Bromberg, and I love her introduction to the pattern:

"Knitting is like building with bricks, and crochet is like building with a fluid erector set - there are no bounds."

Possibly for me the skull is the highlight in the book, with a few misses as well as hits:-

Oxfam Online

How cool is this? Oxfam are now offering an online shopping service! Makes total sense when you think about it, how fantastic......!

As far as I can see delivery is free (or, more likely, built into the cost per item) but it's possible to make a contribution to the charity at the checkout too. Can't beat a bit of charity shopping for a guilt free, eco friendly retail hit that often offers an opportunity to buy something really quite special and unusual too. Super cool.

Bamboo Tape

I've just ordered a stash of the above Rowan Bamboo tape. I have never used it before to crochet with, but was very impressed last week whilst visiting my Mother -in-law, when she showed me a knitted tunic she had recently made using the tape . The finished garment had a lovely silky feel and a nice weight to it. Any other hookers have any experience using it? I ordered it for only 69p a ball from Kemp wool shop , so feel like I'm getting a bargain to boot.

Whilst browsing on Ravelry last night I found a fantastic cardigan pattern, and plan to make it using the grey bamboo tape.

I am now counting the days for my yarn order to arrive.....sad or what??

Charley Harper

A small independent bookshop opened in our village about a year or so ago, and whilst I wonder at how such places can make a living in this day and age of Amazon and Book Depository, I admire the owners impeccable taste when it comes to Art and graphic design, reflected in the books and small stationary items that are stocked.

A while back my eye was attracted to the shop window, displaying a range of Charley Harper children's books. I have been an admirer of Charley Harper's work for a long time now, and couldn't believe my eyes, as he is little known in this part of the world compared to his native USA, where he is viewed as a legend.

Charley Harper's (1922-2007) unique view of wildlife is portraited by means of stylised drawings and paintings, capturing the essence of his subject in as few elements as possible. He once described his style as 'minimal realism' and joked that he doesn't count the feathers of the bird only the wings.

Charley has designed over 50 'Bio' posters for non-profit conservation groups and wildlife sanctuarys. In the 1980's he completed a set of 10 posters for the US National Park Service, each focusing on a specific eco-system and its inhabitants:-

I will selfishly keep it to myself, I might even unearth my set of Pantone markers from my university 'rendering' days, and do a spot of colouring in - it's too good for the children!! But...perhaps I will buy them a copy, because afterall I do want my boys to be exposed to decent art and graphic design in the hope they will appreciate it one day...

Tea Anyone?

As much as I love a good cup of coffee, too much makes me jittery, and really you can't beat a good cup of soothing tea. I am slightly fanatical about my herbal tea collection, and am a sucker for a nice bit of packaging and graphic design. I love the newly designed Clipper tea boxes:

The card is matt in texture, and the pictures so pretty. Clipper also produce my all time favourite, liquorice tea. Admittedly, an acquired taste, liquorice is renowned for its soothing effect on the digestive system and always makes me feel calmer in moments of stress. And what about Celestial Seasons?

You only get 10 bags in a box, so I like to think of them as the luxury tea, wrapped in waxed paper the flavours are very unique - have you ever tried a 'Red Zinger'?

Another favourite brand is 'Yogi' tea. They do a delicious chocolate tea, which combines vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa shells and liquorice. My 2 boys enjoy a hot cup of this, which is a nice non dairy alternative to hot chocolate. Anyone else a tea lover? any recommendations?

Splash of Red

Not much happening on the 'Hooking' front right now, I am defiantly needing some inspiration. I guess as we start to emerge from the cold winter months, I don't much feel like making any cosy hats or gloves. I did pick up a bargain 50p ball of silk/kid mohair yarn from our local Red Cross Charity shop, and fancied making a little neckerchief to brighten up my all too grey outfits. This one was made during a half hour episode of 'Nurse Jackie'.

I started with 3 chains, gradually increased at either end of the row to make a 'tip', and then decreased until I had 5 stitches. Crocheted until it was long enough to go round my neck and then repeated the 'tip' for the other end.

I'm rubbish at 'accessorising' outfits, so I'm hoping this will make me try a bit harder - it's a start...

Da Font (Snow day activities -part 2)

I like to encourage my children to draw and colour in pictures as much as possible, but even I have to agree that there are some uninspiring kids colouring books and printable websites out there. I discovered the website Da Font (a free to download font website) a few years back, when I grew tired of the default fonts Microsoft supplied you with and wanted some fresh ideas. The Dingbat category (a type of font that uses small pictures instead of letters) is inspired!

yesterday I down-loaded a few funky fonts, opened a Word Document and let the little peeps rip - Lego was their Dingbat font of choice, but honestly there are hundred to choose from.

I converted a few of the docs into paint files and showed then how to use the 'fill tool' - very satisfying.

P.S - let me know if you need help with the technical side of installing fonts, and I'll do a quick tutorial.

The Schools were closed today in our part of Aberdeenshire after a day of mad snow storms yesterday. The weather has been pretty filthy outside again today, so I knew a day of indoor activities was on the cards with the little ones. Two ideas in particular hit the mark with my two boys (aged 5 and 7) who are both quite active lads, and crafting with them is usually a challenge in itself.

Idea 1- Recycling old Grotty Crayons.

I have seen this idea on the Martha Stewart website, but have never got round to doing it - so thank you HelloCayce for reminding me of the idea on your blog this morning!

Look out your collection of old, broken crayons.

Peel off the paper wrapping and snap up into small pieces.

Find some oven proof moulds, I used some little silicon cupcake cases, but your could use a muffin tin.

Fill up the moulds with the broken crayons and pop in the oven (coolish setting, around 150 degrees centigrade) until melted (about 10 mins)

Once melted, remove from oven and allow to cool down and set in moulds.

and there you have it, a very lovely set of new crayons - my two LOVED the whole process of making these!

Acorn hat Pattern - or how to make up your own design

I posted a photo of my acorn hat on the crochet board of Craftster, and was asked if I had a pattern to go with it. Well, I guess I just made it up as I went along, but if you know the basic principles of crocheting on the round, making a hat is very easy. So I have jotted down some steps for you to follow to make up your own hat pattern:-

Basic Hat pattern Instructions

begin by crocheting a flat circle,* until it is the diameter of the crown of your head (approx 15 -20cm)

Once you have reached your required diameter, continue to crochet around and around and around...until desired length

If you want your hat shape to look a bit more like this (as I did with the acorn hat) Decrease stitches as you crochet down. Make sure you decrease evenly for a uniform shape, but not too much or it will be too tight!

If you'd prefer a more A-line hat, Increase your stitches gradually as you work down

Keep trying on your hat as you go, that way you'll know if you need to decrease/increase stitches, and you should get a perfect fit.

I used very chunky yarn for the acorn hat and made it longer in length to allow for a brim to be turned up. For the stalk at the top, I broke off my wool once I had completed the hat length, and rejoined at the first round on the top of the hat (6 stitches) and crocheted another 6 into them and then went around and around the 6 stitches until my stalk was the desired length.

How to crochet a flat circle

R1: Ch2, 6sc in 2nd ch from hook (6)

R2: Sc 2 in each Sc around (12)

R3: *Sc 1, 2sc in next sc* x6 (18)

R4: *Sc 2, 2sc in next sc* x6 (24)

R5: *Sc 3, 2sc in next sc* x6 (30)

R6: *Sc 4, 2sc in next sc* x6 (36)

.....and so on, you will see a pattern forming, each round is increased by 6 stitches. I find I do have to count the stitches as I am crocheting at this point.

Acorn Hat for Pixie Girl

I am always deeply flattered when someone asks me to crochet something for them, so when my sister Jill (PixiePeg crafts) asked me if I would mind making an acorn hat for her I was thrilled (if a little nervous) at the challenge. In the end I decided to use a chunky wool mix yarn in a nice brown shade. Because the wool was chunky, it made up in no time, although as always when you can't see a person to measure as you go, I was worried the hat wouldn't fit..

I didn't use a specific pattern for the hat, but if you know the principles of crocheting 'on the round' it is quite simple. I used a single crochet stitch, which I thought gave a nice natural textured weave, and made it long enough to roll up a brim at the bottom, and finally made a short stalk on the top.
Jill phoned me today to thank me for the hat I had posted to her, and I was relieved to see it fitted.

I ♥ Hearts

I have a big thing for hearts - their curvy shape, symmetry, lush red colour and the country cottage feel they can lend to a home. If you were to come round to my house, you would notice them dotted in practically every room.

I love this heart garland I made to decorate my dresser at Christmas time, so much so much it never came down. Click here for this great pattern on the blog Suzie's Stuff.

I have been trying my hand at a pattern for a 3d crochet heart, and I have to admit, I am finding it tricky to get my heart symmetrical!

There are many patterns on the Internet for crocheted hearts, but I found this one the simplest to follow at Instructables. A bit more practice I fear before the 14th!

Lacy, Chunky, Cardigan

I have found it a challenge to find crochet patterns for nice, light cardigans that also flatter when worn and so have found myself returning to this one time and time again. This is the 3rd time I have made this cardigan, and as all were made using very different yarns and colours, they have all turned out differently. The pattern is called Chevron Lace Cardigan, and is published on 'Without Seams' blog (very inspiring and talent soaked!). I found it via Ravelry, it's probably the most popular cardigan pattern on Ravelry, and no wonder as it is such a breeze to make. It's a top-down style pattern which means the garment is made in one complete piece , top downwards.

I had planned to make this one longer in length and in the sleeves, but unfortunately ran out of yarn, but I reckon it'll still come in use for layer, wearing on top of dresses etc..

Oh, yes and the sun was shining today when I took these photos - Bliss! roll on Springtime (of course we need the Snow to melt first!) and new cardigans!!!

Sometimes....

Sometimes it takes me a while to get round to finishing things. Eight years ago, pregnant and desperately seeking distraction from all engulfing nausea, I started weaving some pressed strips of fabric and promised myself I'd make something fantastic that would be enjoyed for years to come. The woven strips were secured together with a lot of ironing and a whole lot more wonderweb; I was still convinced sewing machines hated me back in '02. Amazingly, I ended up with two rather pleasing woven panels which were largely useless but looked nice.

I kept one of the pieces for myself (currently residing in the loft - shame on me) while the other piece went to my Mum. She placed it proudly on her sofa arm and admired it a while and then (to her mortification and my shrieks of laughter) she spilled red wine on it and hushed it away affrontedly into a drawer while we pondered how best to clean it.

Last weekend I was searching for sewing inspiration amongst my remnants and there it was... enticingly half finished and Daffodil sunny, peeking out from behind a bag of curtain tape, waiting for an evolution, Mum's woven panel made mine again by her sad passing. It's now a cushion cover - all stabilised with real stitches, a history of its own and a comforting future ahead. It's a sweet reminder of my Mum, my daughter's journey into the world and some of the stories that have woven all three of us together in times gone by. Truly precious, to yours truly. Here it is playing artistic homemade pillow pile up with it's friends...........

Sometimes I see something simple and fantastic and can't wait to get stuck in. That's exactly what happened when I saw a totally cool Valentines Day sachet on Whip-up.net I didn't have any felt in my stash but, itching to produce something on the back of fresh inspiration, I decided to go on some sewing adventures with the lightweight sheets of funky foam the kids like to chop up. So far I've made husband's Valentine's day card and am working on what I anticipate will be the first of many sachets as per the brilliant Whip-up.net instructions. I've ground to a halt at the section that requires me to get the iron out. I'm hoping this mental block will pass soon so watch this space and enjoy the eye candy on the Whip-up tutorial meantime.

Crocheted Cotton Baby Blanket & little Friend (With Pattern)

I have a friend who lives on the other side of the world from me in Australia and has recently given birth to a little boy. It's summer over there right now, so cosy hats and jumpers were out of the question, so I have crocheted a light cotton blanket and a little Koala bear with the same cotton to accompany it.

The blanket was very easy and quick to make, using a V-Stitch (dc, ch 1, dc in same stitch) for the body of the blanket and a simple Picot edging. I used a pattern from Amigurumi Two! (Ana Paula Rimoli) for the small Koala teddy.

Pattern for V-Stitch baby Blanket

Ch 88.

Row 1 (Dc, ch 1, dc) in 5th ch from hook, [skip 2 ch, work V-st in next ch] across to last 2 ch, skip 1 ch, dc in last ch – 28 V-sts and dc at each end of row.

Row 2 Ch 3, turn; work V-st in each ch1-space across, end dc in top of turning chain.

Repeat Row 2 for V-st pattern until there are a total of 34 rows; ch 1 (instead of ch 3), turn. DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

BORDER
Sc in each dc and ch1-space across, end 3 sc in last dc; rotate to side, sc evenly along side edge, 3 sc in first ch of foundation ch; sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; sc evenly along rem side edge, end 2 sc in top of last row turning chain, join with slip st to top of first sc.

Picot Edging
(Ch 2, slip st in second ch from hook, skip 1 sc, slip st in next 2 sc) around, adjusting for corners and end of rnd.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Quick and Easy Floor Cushion

We have been doing a lot of lounging lately, mainly due to the lousy weather and forced confinement within the house. We have all been trying to embrace the situation, snuggling up, watching movies, playing board games etc.. My boys love to lie on the floor in front of the fire, so when passing through Edinburgh at Christmas time I picked up some cheap fabric from Ikea to revamp some old abandoned floor cushions. I must admit I am rubbish on the sewing machine, too slap-dash and impatient, so I opted for an envelope style (think pillowcase) cushion cover to avoid having to worry about adding zips or buttons. Heres a quick tutorial of how I made them:-

Step one - Measure and cut out material

The cushion cover apparently should be the same size as the pad, to give a nice fit. Cut the length of fabric so that the ends overlap envelope style when folded over the pad.

Step 2 - hem each end

Step 3 - fold up and pin into position

As you can see the 2 ends over lap here( right sides facing). the idea is to sew right up each side from top to bottom - simple!

Step 4:- Sew up and trim

Because my fabric was a bit too wide for the cushion pad, I sewed generous hems on each side and then trimmed them down for neatness.

Step 5 - Un-inside out Cushion cover and insert your pad

ok, a bit slap dash, but the end result is great. So easy I made another...

Well, there it went....... the first year of GWI blogging! What a brilliant first year it's been too. It's fantastic to see each other's creatively inclined finds on and off the internet and, of course, looking at the back catalogue of our own work is a great reminder of achievements as individuals and as a group. It has also been lovely to start receiving feedback from our blog readers - what a treat.

I've loved pretty much every post on our wee blog but if I had to choose... my personal favourites, in no particular order, would be.........

Pam's crocheted scarf for her Mum ~ Ali's post about Ron Mueck's exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery (which inspired an unforgettably brilliant day out for me and mine in the Granite City) ~ Fiona's post about her brilliant lampshade ~ the simplicity of Elaine's fabric printed tablecloth and the 'Nothing is original' Jim Jarmusch quote post, because I love the positive, creative and honest sentiments of his words.

And then I think of all the things we did and haven't blogged about yet... our mosaic frames, lino cutting, all those crocheted heart garlands that the hookers among us rattled up for Christmas time... our hilarious attempts to clean sheep fleece in readiness for adventures in felting... The metres of bunting for kiddy birthdays and cakes, biscuits and bakes galore. Sweet.

Lacy Crochet

I have been messing about with some new crochet techniques lately and thought I'd try my hand at a bit of lacy crochet. I bought the book 'KYUUTO! Japanese Crafts - Lacy Crochet' last year and have been trying to get my head around following a diagram instead of a written pattern. Once mastered, I'm sure this will open up a whole new world of fabulous Japanese crochet patterns.

So, as you can see above, each stitch is represented by a symbol on the diagram, fairly straight forward? hmm, I'm not too sure...I didn't progress further than the 3rd round when I tried out this lacy doily (see top photo). This is what the finished item should look like(photo taken from afore mentioned book):-

It was an enjoyable challenge to work with the fine crochet threads I've had in my stash for a year or so now, picked up for pennies from my local Charity shop. I also used a 2mm hook from my new set of hooks my Mum gave me for my birthday last year - fiddly, but I love the delicate results - must try harder next time, I'd really like a hand crocheted doily for my dresser!!

January Cheer

All my Christmas decorations are down and tidied away for next year, and the house is looking plain and a bit drab to me now. I'm particulary missing our colourful bauble wreath that has been hanging on the front door for almost a month now. Luckily for me I have a replacement to cheer me up through the long wintery days of january:-

This beautiful wreath was a gift from my sister Jill at Christmas time. Jill uses natural materials, gathered in her local area of Northumberland to make her wreaths and other crafts. Her blog Pixiepegs gives details of inspiration and material choice.

This particular wreath is made from Hazel twigs which still have their tiny catkins attached. The bright red gingham ribbon is a lovely contrast to my blue door and the little robin an interesting detail. Thank you Jill - I love it, January isn't going to be quite so gloomy for me this year!!

Amineko, the sleeping cat

Hot off the hook - meet Amineko, the sleeping cat. He's a bit of a character, who as you can see has exactly the right idea at this time of year when it's cold and dark, and that is to sleep.

I found this pattern here via a link on ravelry, which was very well written and easy to follow. the nice thing about this amigurumi cat is he is very easy to place in different posing positions. The pattern suggested weighting the body, arms and legs with plastic pellets, so after a bit of thought I filled them with hama beads, and indeed it has added just the right amount of weight to the limbs for perfect sleeping positions.

Cosy Snood to Keep out the Chill

It can get pretty cold up here in the North of Scotland in Winter, particularly during the school run, that playground can feel pretty nippy. This winter has been problematic for me so far, being plagued with ear infections etc, which has meant I have been needing a cosy hat/scarf to bundle up my face and ears. The other day a parcel arrived in the post address to me from my mum.

My mum, Margaret is a seasoned knitting addict and in the blink of an eye she has knocked out a cosy winter snood to keep me warm - it's perfect, and as the snow begins to fall for the first time this winter, I am enjoying pulling on my snood and snuggling it around my face.

I asked my Mum for the pattern she used, and experienced knitter that she is, she didn't use one, but she helpfully passed on instructions for us novices (I still can't give up the hook for the needles I'm afraid!!)

" cast on 100 stitches and knit in rib until 100g ball of wool is used up. You can knit on 2 pins and sew seam or knit on circular needles, which is what i did for this one. "

So there you go, snoods all round this season I reckon, could be the next big thing.......

Ruby's Monkey

I like to sail close to the wind when it comes to finishing projects with a deadline, and this monkey has been finished right in the nick of time. You may recognise the pattern as a female version of this monkey, and is an order for a friends little girl as a Christmas gift.

The pattern is available free online here, and is a relatively easy amigurumi project for beginners. I hand embroidered the face and added a button to the top of the legs to make them slightly hinged and moveable. It' s always a bit nerve racking when you crochet an item to order, so I hope it meets all expectations...

I'm excited,- you know when you see something that just really inspires and gets your creative juices flowing? Well, thats where I am right now, just look at this wonderful crocheting maddess....

The crocheting genius responsible for these crazy creations is Howie Woo, and I don't want to make a big deal about this, but as you've seen from the name - Howie is a MAN!! I find this so fantastic, and my 7 year old son who is currently learning to crochet couldn't be more excited by the prospect of crocheted granades and guns!!

Howies' blog (WooWork) is packed with witty photos, cartoons and story board videos based around said crocheted item. I could go on and on, so please check it out. Forget cheap plastic toy guns!! not in this house, my boys are very soon going to be the proud owners of their first hand crocheted laser blaster gun...watch this space!!

Gingerbread House

Here is the Gingerbread house I made with the kids last weekend. I did cheat, its a kit from Aldi (around £4.00) which included all the little sweeties and little sugar people. Not really a thing of great beauty, but it was fun to make - everyday one child will ask me when they can eat it - anyone know the etiquette for eating Gingerbread houses?

I'm not getting a whole load of time to be creative with craft at the moment, however, I was chuffed to finish and send off this wee project for a friend's birthday - it's a roll up wrap for knitting needles. Very easy to put together and a really satisying use for remnants of fabric and time.

Printing memories

This etching was the product of last years print making course at Greys Art College in Aberdeen. It was inspired by a picture taken of my Dad many years ago. Asleep with the newspaper across his knee, a typical Sunday afternoon pose. The print used a variety of the techniques they showed us on the course, which was excellent. Still working on the film development from this years photography course. I love ME time!!!

How cute are these?? These little designs are based on a pattern in the fabulous 'Amigurumi Two' book by Ana Paula Rimola. I adapted the design slightly for the fir tree, by crocheting a basic 'christmas tree' shape top and then a simple cup shape for a base. The cleverness in the design of these little pots are the 'Back post' stitches used at the top to give a ridge for the lid to sit on - don't be put off if you've never tried this stitch before (I know I was), it is very simple -watch this video for a how to.

My boys were thrilled when they opened up the pots and found the little creatures inside - I love them!!

GWI are having a table at a local Christmas Craft Fair next week. I'm planning on selling some baby beanie hats, a few panda/cute critters or two and some of these jolly little fellows.

Great fun to crochet, I made sure the guage was tight (small hook normally does the trick, i used a 3mm one) to ensure the stitches were close together to prevent the stuffing showing through. I found this pattern on the Crochetme website:-

After my little brothers wedding I realised that many of the older generations were not around to produce some of the lovely samplers that I have, to celebrate my wedding. So I have set about that task myself. My first attempt was a mixed stitch sampler, which was ok but a little coarse. So I then went on to use Dan and Carries wedding invite ( seen beside the sampler, a little unusual in it's self) to inspire a needle point piece. I only put on their names and the date of their marriage. An unusual reminder, to hang some where discreet like the wardrobe!

Saturday!! -yippee!! Start of the October school break and with an absent father/husband off running up a ski slope in the Cairngorms, all in the name of fun, the boys and I are having a lazy afternoon. In a fit of nostalgia, harking back to when my boys were toddlers, I have just cooked up a big gungy pan of play dough:-

Play Dough Recipe
300g / 10 oz flour
180g / 7 oz salt
2 tbsp cream of Tartar
scant tsp of Oil
500 ml / 15 floz water
1 tsp vanilla (optional, just makes it smell nice)

Mix together in a pan and bring to boil stirring continuously until it becomes 'dry' looking, remove from heat and allow to cool. Knead to bring together into smooth ball and if you like, knead in a few drops of food colour until desired colour.

45 minutes later, my 2 are still playing with it, which is a small miracle in itself given their short attention spans, I am trying hard to ignore the state of my kitchen table and floor!!

Baby Beanies

These little hats have been a joy to make, and knock up very, very quickly. Hats and beanies I have made in the past have been done 'on the round' which are great in themselves, but sometimes I crave thick, chunky, ribbed knitted hats and I wondered if I could recreate the look with crochet.

Enter the half double crochet!! this beanie has been crocheted as a flat rectangle, slip stitched together into a tube and then decreased at the top to close the tube. I have made this pattern for a new born size, but it is completely adaptable, add more stitches to increase the depth of the hat, add more rows to increase the circumference.

This pattern is for the 0-3 month size only. 5.5mm hook & WW (chunky)yarn.
With red yarn, CH 22.
Row 1: HDC in 3rd ch from hook and each st across, ch 2, turn. (20 HDC)
Row 2: HDC in each st across, ch 2, turn (20 hdc)
Row 3 - 25: Repeat row 2.
Join work end-to-end and Slip Stitch up the side. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Turn right side out.

With green yarn, join with SC to top of hat next to the seam. Work SC's around the top but do not join.
Work SC2TOG continuously around the top of the hat until there are 4-5 STS remaining.
For stalk make 1 SC in each ST around, for approx 5 rounds until the stem is the height you want. Fasten off and poke the string down into the hat.

For the pom-pom hat, without the stalk, I simply joined on the same colour yarn at the top of the tube, (as with the berry) and continued to decrease until the hole was filled - I do wonder if this could be done a bit neater by just threading yarn around the top edge of the tube and pulling tight to join?

**UPDATE** I have just made another plain beanie (without berry stalk) and have found it to be much quicker and neater, if once you have created the 'tube' you simply make a running stitch with matching yarn around the top and then pull tight to close.

Happy Hookers Fat Bottom Bag

I have made this bag before (Fat Bottom Bag, published in 'Happy Hooker' by Debbie stroller), but couldn't get to grips with the wooden hoop handles. I need a bag I can just sling over my shoulders. After a search on Ravelry I found this adaption on the brilliant Bend Beanies blog. The bag had been made deeper with extra rows around the band at the top, and the handles crocheted onto the side of the bag.

For the first time in my life I also lined the finished bag, hoping that the touch of fabric would take away the 'homemade' look. To make the bag a bit more secure, I crocheted a strap and added a vintage button from my Granny's button collection. I do intend to make a corsage to sew to the straps, but in the mean time have pinned a lovely knitted flower broach my Mum recently made for me. Can a girl have too many bags?

Fairy Tale Blanket

I have a pile of patches sitting on top of our bookshelves that rather remind me of the incredible, inviting stack of mattresses in The Princess and the Pea fairy tale. My little patches aren't waiting to have a vegetable inserted between them or to be tested by royalty, however. They're waiting to be joined by yet more little patches before being fashioned into a blanket. I imagine the blanket's (distant) future as one of much luxury; it'll sit on the back of a deeply comfy chair waiting for someone who needs a bit of blankety goodness to match lazy thoughts of coffee, music, swaying fireplace flames and a good book on a wintery day. Blissful. Maybe cake should feature in the picture too, it would be unkind to leave it out of such perfection. I can visualise the blanket's future so clearly and with such decadence that it's a bit of a shock to look back at my wee squares and find them unfinished.... Ach well, the vision is good motivation nonetheless.

The squares are made of Bamboo tape yarn and were originally inspired by a little moss stitch heart tutorial in the Stitch 'n' Bitch Knitter's Handbook. The great thing about Bamboo tape for a knitting novice like me is it's very easy to reverse and correct mistakes thanks to the yarn's ribbony structure and slight stretch. On a very practical note the Bamboo's totally washable in the machine too, this will be very helpful when it comes to my less than careful attitude towards devouring coffee and cake. I simply cannot exist in a dry-clean only environment.

So far I've completed about 25 squares, each is 23 stitches by 23 rows, I think I'll need about 60-80 squares to make the finished product a decent size. The whole project is ideal for picking up here and there, doing a little and then putting down till time becomes available again. Even when there isn't time to knit, in their stack of mattresses kinda way, these wee squares are eye candy just as they are.

After the arrival of a friends fourth baby ( I can sympathize with that number, but know it is enough), I dug out my knitting needles and resurrected one of my favourite patterns. The wonderfully unisex tuck through scarf. It is a straight forward idea and I tend to follow my nose with it. Firstly I dug around in my huge bag of half finished projects and pulled out a ball of beautiful blue grey bamboo tape. Then I wrestled with my drawer full of knitting needles until I found two that matched. I started with casting on three stitches, then in plain knit increased at the end of every row until I was happy with the length. Then cast every other stitch onto a holder kneedle and knitted the remainder for 5 rows or so. I put those stitches onto a holder and knitted the other half up in the same way. Once the two pieces were the same size I knitted them together alternately, back onto one needle. Then continued with plain knit until I was happy with the length. I finished off by doing the same in reverse. Divided the stitches, knitted the separate pieces, rejoined and finished by decreaseing at the end of every row. When I had three stitches remaining I cast off. Now that sounded as clear as mud! Have a go and experiment you might hit it lucky and make something recognisable.

Finally I have found the time and have set up my shiney new hardware to do more blogging. I am feeling inspired by Heathers knitting find. I am loving the clickety clack of my needles in the evening. My neck cuff is taking shape and needs an inspired lining. This evening I am thinking about my new sister-in-law Carrie, who asked me to rustle up a wedding necklace, for her marriage to my brother Dan. After much discussion we came up with a loose brief and the lovely let me have a long leash for the rest. I mixed lucite flowers, very Carrie, retro and quirky, with tibetan silver charms and beads, reminding me of my Dad who couldn't be there for the wedding. I managed to use the extras to make some cute hair pins. Carrie looked beautiful and was kind enough to say she loved the creation........what else could she say!

On the Round....Stool Cosy

In-keeping with the round theme, whilst watching 'The Tudors' last Friday night I knocked out, using lovely thick cotton yarn a 'stool cosy' to brighten up my rather drab bathroom and to keep my little ones bottoms warm during teeth cleaning duty.

Using only single crochet, I gradually increased each round until I had reached the desired size of my stool (around 130 stitches.) I then decreased quickly to create a smalled diameter. The finished item was then stretched over the stool, and tied with extra yarn underneath to prevent any small fingers pulling it off.

I have to admit I am enjoying the simplicity of the dense single crochet stitch and have been mesmerised by the 'pinwheel' pattern I am finding in the rounds.

Finally managed to finish some simple crochet projects and post them, inspired by the book by Erika Knight, 'simple crochet', I have used cotton and hessian string, and am now inspired to try some more. I'll have to look in some junk shops to find some different sized bottles for crocheting, or perhaps try and create some sculptutral shapes out of wire to crochet. I feel the need to try some crochet bottles on a larger scale so watch this space....giant crocheting here I come...

Proper Peppermint Creams

When the sun doesn't come out in summer I get a strong urge to bake. I also get a strong urge to eat completely scrumptious things, but that's a year round thing.

My daughter and I made these peppermint creams at the weekend. Technically this isn't baking but they are most definitely scrumptious. These little lovelies made the perfect accompaniment to a fabulously massive cup of fresh coffee and a warm seat in front of the window watching the rain tip down.

Ingredients

1 egg white
400-420g of sifted icing sugar, plus extra
Few drops of peppermint flavouring or peppermint oil
Pink and green food colourings (optional)
Good dark choc for melting

Beat the egg white until it's just turned frothy and then add to 300g of sifted icing sugar. Add about 3 drops of peppermint oil or flavouring and a drop or two of food colouring. Fork the ingredients roughly together and continue adding tablespoons of sifted icing sugar until the mix is stiffening and can be handled into a rough ball shape. Taste and add a one or two more drops of peppermint if required. Knead the ball for a minute or so and add more sifted icing sugar if the dough feels too sticky or wet.

Lightly oil a piece of parchment paper and lay out. Shape the sweets as desired (sift sugar on worktop if rolling dough or else it will stick) and air dry the cut/shaped sweets on the parchment paper for 20 mins before decorating by dipping or dripping dark melted chocolate. We shaped our sweets by rolling balls of dough and then squishing them gently between thumb and forefinger.

I'm going to have to make and eat these again very soon, I miss them already.

Printing With Fabric Paints

I've been searching for a 'big old' table cloth for a while now, something fresh and light that I can throw over our kitchen table to brighten my mood or to use out in the garden on our big outdoor table on a summers day. A month or so back I bought a couple of wood block stamps (fairtrade) from Newton Dee's gift shop and thought that the pattern would look lovely on a plain white piece of fabric as a table cloth.

Dylon do a fantastic range of fabric paints, where all you need to do to 'fix' the paint is to iron it. So, this morning, on my hands and knees on the kitchen floor I stamped out a central pattern on a white sheet I had aquired from a local charity shop, left it to dry and then ironed and washed the sheet. My new table cloth certainly freshens up the kitchen, but it was whisked away immediatly at the mention of 2 small children sitting down to eat their pasta for tea....

Dresser Love

I never thought I was a dresser type of person, too twee for my taste - that was until I was awe struck at the sight of a friends dresser, bought for a bargain at a thrift shop, and painted with lovely 'Farrow and ball' egg shell paint - I had to have one!! So the quest began - checking our local furniture charity shop on a regular basis - nothing for weeks, months...until one Thursday afternoon I hit the jackpot.....

Horribly dated, with that orangy pine look, but after a bit of a sand down, 2 coats of undercoat and 2 coats of paint, I couldn't be more pleased.

If I had more time in the day or/and was better organised, one thing I truely wish I could achieve would be to bake a nice fresh crusty loaf of bread everyday, but for now I have to settle with it being either a weekend treat or a packed lunch emergency at 8pm the night before.

The loaves above were made using 2 part strong white to 1 part wholegrain with the added loveliness of date syrup and pumpkin seeds - they didn't last long, but long enough to give me that smug glow of feeling like a domestic goddess, for half an hour at least...

I wonder if I can claim my recent little creations are part of our Renewal theme? A pair of husband's old jeans, some remnants from curtains and the legs from daughter's old bootcut trousers have been most helpful in offering themselves to be reborn as heat packs filled with grains of cheapo rice doused in Lavender oil. The packs are now ready to begin their new lives; they'll be gifted away - according to my diary it's officially birthday season now - and then occasionally stuck in the microwave for 2 minutes before lying on an aching muscle or warming chilly sheets. Perfect on the lower back after a bit of springtime weed pulling?

Shortbread Biscuit Recipe

Makes approx. 12 biscuits

115g butter
175g plain flour
pinch of salt
55g caster sugar

This recipe isn't a do or die - I use Lurpak spreadable instead of butter and quite often use golden granulated sugar instead of caster sugar, just depends what's in the cupboard. Whatever variation, these little biscuits always seem to work out beautifully.

Oven to 180

Mix together the flour, salt and sugar. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients. Continue to work until a soft dough is formed.

Roll the dough into a sausage with a diameter of about 5cm. Cut discs of just less than 1cm thick from the dough and place onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes.

Dip in melted chocolate, sprinkle with sugar or drizzle with lemon icing when cooled.

Eat. Yum.

Cosy Crocheted Neck Warmer

I have admittedly been feeling the cold with all this snowy weather around at the moment, and wanted to make something cosy for myself. This neck warmer is just the ticket, knocked up in less than an hour using double strand wool to give it a chunky feel, I learnt a simple new crochet stitch too, a simple weave effect using chain and single crochet. I have been wearing it ever since. Found this particular pattern at Mingling Yarn, so easy...

Button Up

Not a recent project but I like this pic of the glazed pottery buttons I made in 2007. My happy green teapot and the wee hinged lid desk were both bargains from The Box Room in Banchory. The box frames are from IKEA. I'd like to make a huge batch of the buttons one day and have them sitting out on a plate or in a tin like a fresh batch of biscuits. That'd be nice, I reckon.

've been an avid 'hooker' for over a year now, self taught, my scope of patterns hasn't really gone beyond hats, wristwarmers or slippers for the kids, until now!!! spured on by the interesting patterns published on the website http://www.ravelry.com/ (a fab community for knitting and crochet patterns) I am currently in the throws of my first attempt at a cardigan, so far it's proving far too easy, made in one piece from neck downwards, the lacy stitch is interesting and quick to make up.

I'm using a 50% wool mix yarn by King Cole, purchased from our local craft shop, which I am pleased to see is stocking a larger and more interesting range of wool now, another couple of inches on the length, sleeves and a front band and it'll be finished, watch this space...

Felt and Oak Lamp

This is a lamp inspired by GWI get togethers last year, to do something 3d with felt and also to recycle an old lamp stand and lamp shade. Has definitely inspired me to have a go at re-inventing some other old lamp shades.

January Jobs

The last week has been a whirlwind of catching up with jobs. One of which was forcing the children, at knife point, to write Christmas thank you notes. I decided to make a thank you for my nearest and dearest, who kindly looked after our furry beasts, whilst we were on holiday. I found some gorgeous woollen tweed yarn and took it from there. The product of a few late nights watching film four, are three crocheted flower brooches.

Easy Knit Baby Hat

Stylishly modelled by my sugar canister, I bring you my moss stitch newborn hat, knitted in bamboo yarn with size 4.5 needles, if I recall correctly.

Ever a fan of rectangular & square patterns which require very little skill, I decided this half finished ball of yarn should transform as effortlessly as possible into a baby hat for a friend's newborn. I worked out rough baby-head dimensions with the help of Baby Annabel and a grapefruit. Following my highly scientific experiments with fruit and children's toys I knit a rectangle before casting off all but 5 stitches and then decreasing these 5 by 1 stitch every 3 rows to make a tapering tail for loosely closing the hat. Making up consisted of simply folding the rectangle in half and stitching the back edges together on the inside. The tail pokes between reinforced stitches to close off the hat. Super easy urchin chic.
